- Mechanical Forensic Engineer
Description
Arcon Forensic Engineers is seeking a Mechanical Engineer with a strong interest in forensic investigations, insurance claims, and litigation support. In this role, you will investigate mechanical system failures and property losses, determine cause and origin, and provide clear, defensible expert opinions used in insurance and legal contexts.
This position is ideal for an engineer who is curious about why something goes wrong, who enjoys hands-on investigations & analytical problem-solving. The engineer must be able to communicate complex technical findings to non-technical audiences.
Requirements
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct forensic investigations involving mechanical systems such as HVAC, plumbing, fire protection, and industrial equipment
- Collaborate with insurance adjusters, lawyers, contractors, and multidisciplinary forensic teams
- Perform site inspections, document damage, and collect evidence for analysis
- Review maintenance records, design documents, code compliance and installation practices in the context of claims
- Assess losses related to insurance claims, including failures due to water damage, freezing, mechanical breakdown, and installation deficiencies
- Determine cause, origin, and extent of mechanical failures or system malfunctions
- Prepare clear, concise, and defensible expert reports for insurers, adjusters, and legal counsel
- Provide expert opinion and, when required, support litigation through depositions, mediations, and court appearances
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Materials or Industrial Engineering
- Licensed Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) in Ontario (preferred), or on track to obtain their P.Eng.
- Relevant mechanical engineering experience
- Strong knowledge of building mechanical systems and failure mechanisms
- Experience conducting site inspections and condition assessments
- Demonstrated ability to write technical reports
- Excellent analytical, communication, and documentation skills
- Ability to manage multiple assignments and deadlines
- Valid driver’s license, access to a vehicle and willingness to travel for field investigations
Preferred Qualifications
- Direct experience in forensic engineering, insurance claims, or litigation support
- Familiarity with HVAC system failures, plumbing losses, and fire protection systems
- Experience with expert witness work, including report preparation, affidavits, or testimony
- Knowledge of codes and standards such as OBC, ASME, ASHRAE, ASTM and CSA
