Description
Job Posting — Forensic Mechanical Engineer (W-2, Full-Time)
$105,000 – $170,000 base plus bonus. Remote, nationwide.
Industrial Loss Consultants, Inc. (ILC) is hiring a Forensic Mechanical Engineer as a full-time W-2 employee. You will
consult on equipment and machinery losses for insurance carriers and independent adjusters — establishing cause of
loss, assessing extent of damage, and opining on repair versus replacement. You will work from a home office and travel
to loss sites as assignments require.
The Work
ILC handles commercial and industrial equipment and machinery claims. Assignments come from losses across building
systems, manufacturing, medical facilities, and agriculture, on machinery and equipment that has failed or sustained
damage.
In a given year you might consult on machining centers, presses and extruders, pumps and gearboxes, compressors and
chillers, turbines, boilers and industrial ovens, conveyors, elevators and cranes, production lines, and more.
ILC consultants carry an assignment end to end: initial site inspection, cause of loss determination, extent of damage
assessment, rough order of magnitude and detailed repair cost estimates, repair versus replacement analysis,
subrogation potential, and project management through the return of the equipment to pre-loss condition.
What You'll Do
Provide technical consulting and project management services in insurance loss situations, including:
Traveling and performing site visits and inspections.
Conduct research on the insured's business and machinery.
Reporting and opining on repair vs. replacement, restoration, costs, etc.
Project managing loss situations to return the insured to pre-loss condition efficiently.
Being the eyes and ears for the insurance adjuster and keeping them apprised of developments, delays,
concerns and otherwise.
Sourcing and managing vendors as necessary to restore the insured to pre-loss condition.
Coordinating repair and replacement timelines.
Coordinating the efforts of vendors, OEMs, and numerous parties.
Calling out betterments, upgrades, and discrepancies wherever possible, with an emphasis on saving our
client time and money.
Gather and archive the documentation that supports your findings — photographs, OEM literature, service
history, vendor information, knowledge from the insured, and published references.
Look for circumstances where ILC can add value by expanding scope, bringing in additional expertise,
recommending alternative repair paths, or mitigating business interruption, with the client’s approval before
proceeding.
Deliver objective, accurate analysis. Always report a defendable position that will stand up to a legal challenge.
Provide the customer service and know-how that exceeds our clients’ expectations. Word of mouth referrals
drive assignments in this industry; your goal is to receive high marks from adjusters on every assignment.
What You Need A minimum of 5 years determining root cause on equipment and machinery failures, and providing solutions to
repair and return damaged equipment to pre-loss condition.
Strong foundational knowledge of mechanical engineering principles across commercial and industrial
machinery, sufficient to establish the cause of loss for a mechanical failure and defend that conclusion.
Working knowledge of the mechanical systems found in production lines, presses, pumps, gearboxes,
compressors, boilers, elevators, and building equipment, with the ability to identify root cause and extent of
damage at the component level.
Exceptional verbal and written communication skills. You must be able to synthesize an engineering-level
analysis for a claims adjuster with no technical background while producing a record that holds up in litigation.
The ability to quantify repair or replacement costs and conduct the supporting research.
Excellent time management. You will carry several open files at once, and adjusters judge us on responsiveness.
The ability to work with little supervision and to communicate proactively with both the client and ILC
management.
The ability to navigate active loss sites and climb onto equipment, ladders, catwalks, and other locations where
the machinery is located.
Willingness to travel nationwide; frequency varies by assignment.
Demonstrated ability to validate third-party repair and replacement costs — reviewing contractor and OEM
quotes, challenging inflated scope and pricing, and substantiating your own estimate with supporting research
and market data.
Prior forensic experience as a mechanical engineer.
Strong computer skills, including file management and working fluency in Outlook, Excel, and Word.
Exceptional attention to detail and the discipline to keep all client and claim information confidential.
Preferred
A Professional Engineering license in your resident state. Licensure in multiple states is a plus.
Residence within 45 minutes of a major airport.
Demonstrated leadership guiding teams and coordinating multidisciplinary efforts under deadline.
Compensation
