Description
The Broadcast Engineer serves as the functional team lead for WUCF-FM's broadcast information technology, overseeing the station's 24/7/365 technical operations. This role is responsible for the maintenance, operation, and future development of all broadcast-related IT infrastructure, including IP-based digital transmission/transmitter hardware, internet streaming technologies, IP-based audio/video systems (recording, playout, editing, switching, encoding, decoding), automation systems, and server infrastructure. The position requires a deep understanding of broadcast engineering principles, IT networking, and streaming technologies, as well as the ability to lead and collaborate effectively within a broadcast environment.
Responsibilities:
Serve as functional team lead for IT Infrastructure-Broadcast Technicians reviewing and approving the work products generated by other engineering staff in the unit.
Maintain and repair IP based AV equipment as required to keep systems operational including but not limited to IP based digital transmission/transmitter systems, internet streaming devices, digital IP audio/video record and play-out systems, non-linear editors, production switchers, routing switchers, encoders, decoders, automation and server/file storage systems.
Provides on-call 24/7/365 service during nights, weekends and university holidays. Serve as emergency contact during overnight and unattended broadcast operation. Provide live in-studio recording sessions and field production support as required for both FM and TV.
Assists Director of Operations and Engineering with capital budget and annual operating/maintenance budget recommendations, quote and bid, prep/analysis, and representing projects with vendors and university departments.
Designs and implements engineering designs including audio/video workflow and builds and installs electronic systems/equipment. Provide specific engineering IP signal flow diagrams for CAD/Visio documentation on all work performed on technical systems. Maintain logs and records as appropriate to meet Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB) requirements. Knowledgeable of FCC, CPB, WARN and Area 7 Emergency Alert System planning and regulations. Completes technical studies and technical reports to assist in preparation of station license renewal requests.
Supports the Director of Operations and Engineering with management of WUCF owned FM broadcast tower site and ensures FCC and Federal Aviation Administration compliance with all legal requirements. This includes working on tower lease details and dealing with tower clients, structural engineers, and tower maintenance companies.
Maintain and repair technical and physical plant including studios, tower sites, transmitter buildings and office buildings. Performs other duties and participates in special projects as assigned.
Requirements
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor's or Master's degree and 4+ years of relevant experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience pursuant to Fla. Stat. 112.219. Click here for more information
Preferred Qualifications:
Extensive knowledge of digital transmission/transmitter hardware, including experience with maintenance, repair, and configuration.
Experience with production switchers, routing switchers, encoders, decoders, and other broadcast-related hardware.
Deep understanding of IP networking protocols, routing, switching, and network security.
Experience with internet streaming devices and platforms, including encoding, delivery, and monitoring of audio/video streams.
Knowledge of FCC, CPB, WARN and Area 7 Emergency Alert System planning and regulations.
