Description
University Medical Center of El Paso (UMC) is looking to fill a Performance Improvement Engineer II (PI Engineer) position. The PI Engineer II works on projects which involves process design and implementation or improvement of current processes within the hospital setting. Analyzes process flows of information through hospital and clinic facilities by applying a wide range of quantitative and qualitative tools and models.
The PI Engineer II utilizes analytical skills and process improvement experience to make a meaningful positive impact for patients. Supports the organization’s analytics efforts and supports the implementation of the Malcolm Baldrige framework.
Experience/Education/Licensing Requirements
- Five years of experience in engineering in the areas of process improvement, data analysis, process design, Malcolm Baldrige excellence framework and preferably with three years’ work experience in a hospital setting.
- Bachelor’s degree in Industrial Engineering, Operations Management or closely related field is required. Mater’s degree preferred.
Essential Duties/Responsibilities
- Builds partnerships with operational leaders and teams across the organization to improve processes throughout.
- Performs complex and diverse activities involving organization-level initiatives, systems, and performance.
- Works closely with Hospital leaders/executives to use performance management practices and data so they can make informed program and process improvements, spend resources wisely, and ultimately deliver better services.
- Uses systematic approaches for designing management systems; diagnosing organizational deficiencies; facilitating the development and implementation of hospital-wide and department/division strategic and operational plans in alignment with organizational goals and priorities.
- Assists departments and divisions with the development and use of analytical models; and conducting evidence-based practice research that provides actionable insights for managerial decision making.
- Conducts qualitative and quantitative analysis and/or optimization methods with departments to build analytical models with data from existing databases, observations, and business processes to identify value-added business measures and improvement initiatives and providing actionable insights and decision support to help management solve problems and answer complex questions.
- Reports and educates analytical best practices across departments; collaborating with team members on projects related to performance management and continuous improvement; and providing training, coaching, and mentoring for Hospital staff on topics related to data analytics, performance measurement, and continuous improvement.
- Assists departments in deploying the proper continuous improvement tools (example: Lean Six Sigma), techniques, and practices aimed at improving the Hospital’s employees’ and patients’ experience; improving efficiency and effectiveness of Hospital processes, procedures, and policies.
- Proactively analyzes performance data and identifies initiatives in support of improved labor management, patient flow, quality, safety and cost.
- Serve as a Malcolm Baldrige internal coach/examiner and supports the Malcolm Baldrige framework’s implementation throughout the Hospital District.
- Serve as subject matter expert and system administrator for various Hospital software solutions.
- Evaluates results to ensure data-driven sustainable improvement in clinical and business operations.
- Coordinates and implements quality control objectives, activities, or procedures to resolve service problems, maximize service reliability, or minimize costs.
- Determines the most effective means for Hospital to use capital, equipment, energy, facilities, information, material, people, and other assets to provide services.
- Designs management control systems to aid financial planning and cost analysis.
- Reviews functional statements, organization charts, and project information to determine functions and responsibilities of workers and work units and to identify areas of duplication.
- Develops methods, utilization standards, and cost analysis systems to promote efficiency and facility utilization.
- Studies operations sequence, service flow, functional statements, organization charts, and project information to determine functions and responsibilities.
Skills
- Knowledge of information systems, including office automation and data analysis tools such as MS Office, simulation software, Visio, etc.
- High level of proficiency in business intelligence tools such as Power BI and/or Tableau
- Knowledge of trends and advances in quality, process improvement, and technology tools and methodologies.
- Working knowledge of the Malcolm Baldrige excellence framework
- Experience in software system administration.
- Ability to plan, coordinate and monitor the implementation of recommendations developed through operational and financial analyses in collaboration with internal and external customers, management and team members.
- Ability to coach teams through the implementation of performance improvement methodologies.
- High level of proficiency in the operation of Microsoft applications.
- Strong time management skills.
- Outstanding oral and written communication skills in English.
- Excellent analytical critical thinking skills
- Ability to manage multiple work assignments and meet tight deadlines.
- Knowledge of healthcare operations and/or healthcare facility design preferred.
