Reports to: Building Official Effective Date: June 9, 2026 to July 31, 2026 or until filled
Union: NON-UNION/ EXEMPT Salary: Hiring Range: $ 80,000 -- $ 84,000
JOB SUMMARY
Enforces fire and safety codes in compliance with all applicable local and State laws, and Village business license and rental registration programs. The position reports to the Building Official.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:
Knowledge of municipal and State codes and ordinances relating to building construction, fire prevention, electrical, plumbing, and property maintenance requirements; proficiency with ICC and national fire codes is essential.
Knowledge of fire suppression systems, fire alarm systems, and fire prevention methods
Ability to interpret and enforce regulatory codes firmly and impartially; to effectively supervise staff to prepare written and verbal reports as necessary for architects, contractors, and supervisors.
Ability to work effectively with other Village departments and supervisors, architects, contractors, and the general public – understands and values providing superior customer service
Strong organizational skills and solid knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, including Word and Excel are essential. Experience working with database programs related to property maintenance/building inspections is desirable.
Must be able to read, understand and explain a variety of construction plans, blueprints and specifications.
Excellent interpersonal skills to develop positive intergovernmental and private sector relationships.
Strong sense of professionalism to represent the Village when addressing complaints and difficult customers.
Fair, approachable, organized and possess a mature approach to applying the codes.
Proficient with ICC and national fire codes.
Able to exercise good judgment.
Fluency in Spanish preferred but not required.
JOB DUTIES/KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Enforces the ICC and fire prevention codes, local ordinances, and laws applicable to all structures, with an emphasis on fire prevention.
Reviews construction projects in various stages of development and performs joint inspections with third-party inspectors as needed
Provides consultation, information, and technical assistance to architects, engineers and contractors concerning State and local code requirements
Supervises and resolves fire alarm non-restored reports from third parties
Coordinates fire alarm issues with Fire Department
Identifies, removes and controls fire hazards throughout the Village
Conducts field verifications to determine business license compliance with the Village ordinance pertaining to the issuance of existing business licenses
Reviews fire alarms and sprinkler systems in residential, commercial, industrial and mixed-use buildings and structures during various stages of construction; ensure compliance with applicable codes; perform follow-up inspections as necessary
Researches and responds to problems and complaints regarding commercial buildings, building construction and code compliance
Responds to complex and sensitive building occupancy issues
Resolves complex and sensitive customer service issues, either personally, by telephone or in writing. Maintains and creates records, documents customer service issues and resolutions
Responds to alleged violations; interview complainant and witnesses; document activities; issue letters or notices to comply on violations; maintain records of history of facts for possible legal action
Participates in the administrative adjudication process to include creating and mailing hearing notices, processing fines and fees, monitoring failure to pay, preparing information for collection and enforcement efforts, and filing liens
Manages the rental registration program, including management of third-party consultant.
Administers fire pump testing program
Assist the appropriate Village offices with hearings to resolve code enforcement problems; prepare case reports for adjudication or administrative proceedings; testify in adjudication and at administrative proceedings as necessary
Manages other third-party consultants as deemed necessary
Performs special assignments for the Building Official and/or Community & Economic Development Director, and related work as required
Responsible for prioritizing safety in the workplace by strictly adhering to and familiarizing yourself with all company safety policies and procedures
Participate in and complete all mandatory training assigned
Other duties as assigned
SOFTWARE PROFICIENCIES:
Microsoft Office Suite, MUNIS, Cartegraph, Quicket
EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE
A minimum of 5 years of experience with building review, inspections, and code compliance particularly fire prevention.
Bachelors or associates degree preferred.
Proficient in computer functions, techniques, and software applications for recording, scheduling, and documenting inspection activities.
The successful candidate will be required to pass a pre-employment physical, drug/alcohol test and background investigation.
WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Some positions may involve frequent bending, moving, lifting, and carrying material weighing up to 50 pounds; some positions may involve moving, lifting, and carrying material weighing up to 70 pounds; standing up to eight hours each day; working in all weather conditions; exposure to high noise levels and require wearing hearing protection.

SALARY RANGE:
Compensation range for this position is $72,000 – $90,000 per year, per the Village’s compensation plan. Hiring range for this position is $80,000 – $84,000 per year, depending on qualifications.
The position is a full-time, exempt position. Regular office hours are 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday.
