Description
The City of St. Clair Shores is seeking a skilled and motivated City Engineer to help shape the future of our community by ensuring the quality, safety, and integrity of its infrastructure. Working closely with the Community Development Director, City departments, contractors, and residents, the City Engineer plays a vital role in bringing the City’s Master Plan to life through the planning, coordination, and oversight of municipal construction projects.
From reviewing engineering plans and specifications to overseeing construction in the field, the City Engineer helps ensure that projects are completed to the highest standards of quality, meet applicable requirements, and deliver lasting value to the community. This position offers the opportunity to combine technical expertise with hands-on project management, problem-solving, and public service.
The City Engineer oversees construction projects from the planning and bidding stages through inspection and completion. Responsibilities include preparing technical bid specifications, evaluating contractor proposals, coordinating with other City departments and outside agencies, monitoring construction methods and materials, and approving necessary adjustments to address field conditions. The position also manages outside contractors, reviews project invoices, and supervises staff involved in inspection and related support services.
Beyond the technical aspects of engineering, the City Engineer serves as an important point of contact for residents, businesses, and contractors. The position provides guidance on construction requirements and related ordinances, communicates project schedules and updates to the public, and works collaboratively to resolve conflicts and keep projects moving forward. The City Engineer also investigates alleged construction-related violations within the public right-of-way and works with property owners and businesses to achieve compliance with City regulations.
Requirements
The ideal candidate brings a strong foundation in civil engineering, practical experience with municipal infrastructure construction and inspection, and the ability to interpret engineering plans, evaluate construction practices, and identify deviations from approved specifications. Equally important are sound judgment, effective communication, and the leadership skills needed to coordinate multiple projects, manage contractors and staff, and build productive working relationships across the community.
This position combines the technical challenges of municipal engineering with the opportunity to make a visible, lasting impact on the place residents call home. For a professional who enjoys solving problems, working in the field, collaborating with others, and seeing projects through from concept to completion, the City Engineer offers a rewarding opportunity to contribute to the continued improvement and long-term success of St. Clair Shores.
