Position Description
The Department of Communication and Journalism in the College of Arts and Sciences at Texas A&M University invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professor, with research expertise in critical media studies. This is a full-time, 9-month academic appointment, starting August 1, 2024. Responsibilities include conducting high quality research, teaching undergraduate and graduate courses, effectively mentoring graduate/undergraduate students, and contributing service that furthers initiatives in the department.
The Department of Communication and Journalism offers and administers BA and BS degrees in the fields of communication, media, and journalism, and we administer PhD and MA degrees in Communication. We have over 40 faculty members, more than 35 communication graduate students, and approximately 1,700 undergraduate students. The department promotes an inclusive workplace and is organized into three broad research and curricular divisions: Communication & Media Science, Humanities and Critical/Cultural Studies, and Journalism and Media Practices. Requirements
Required Qualifications
Ph.D. in Communication or a related field and proficiency applying critical theoretical frameworks and methodologies to analyze media-related phenomena. Preference will be given to scholars who employ critical perspectives to advance understanding of contemporary social problems and issues. Sample research areas include but are not limited to environmental justice and sustainability, critical race and ethnic studies, Latina/o/x studies, Africana and/or African American studies, Indigenous studies, Latin American media studies, Asian American diaspora studies, critical gender and/or women’s studies, queer studies, religion and/or religious studies, critical/cultural studies of health and medicine, democratic and/or civic engagement, critical internet studies, surveillance studies, and science technology and society (STS). Applications are welcome from a wide range of communication disciplines and subdisciplines, including media studies, rhetorical studies, political communication, strategic communication, journalism, health communication, and organizational communication, and other sub disciplines and cognate fields so long as the applicant is operating from within critical and/or cultural studies perspectives.
