The Department of Medicine at the University of Washington in Seattle is recruiting for a new Division Head in the Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine. The Division includes over 150 physicians, trainees, and advanced practice providers and more than 50 staff members.The Division Head would be responsible for fostering a diverse and collaborative academic community committed to innovation and discovery, providing expert clinical care, and training future leaders in these specialties. The Division Head should demonstrate a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.

The Pulmonary, Critical Care, and Sleep Medicine Division has excelled in patient care, education, and basic, translational, and clinical research for over 50 years. The Division oversees clinical work, research and education at five medical centers, including the Montlake and Northwest campuses of the University of Washington Medical Center (a quaternary referral center for the five-state WWAMI region), Harborview Medical Center (a safety net hospital and the only level-1 trauma center in a 5-state area), the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center, and the Seattle and Boise VA Medical Centers. Division faculty members are experts in a broad spectrum of pulmonary conditions including acute lung injury, cystic fibrosis, interstitial lung diseases, lung transplantation, obstructive lung disease, pulmonary hypertension, and sleep disorders, as well as the care of critically ill patients. 

The division is actively involved in research. Faculty have national and international reputations in diverse research areas including clinical epidemiology, clinical trials, health services research, genetic epidemiology, global health, lung immunity and repair, and palliative care.  Research centers include the Cambia Palliative Care Center of Excellence and the Center for Lung Biology. 

Division faculty are actively involved in undergraduate and graduate medical education, with 3 ACGME-accredited fellowships in Pulmonary and Critical Care, Critical Care, and Sleep Medicine, and a research fellowship in Palliative Care. The division provides robust research training supported with two NIH T32 awards, including one in its 43rd year of funding.   

Appointment to the full-time faculty would be at the rank of Associate or Full Professor (with tenure). Salary and academic appointment at University of Washington will be commensurate with experience, qualifications, and academic rank. Associate and Full Professors hold indefinite appointments that align with a 12-month service period (July 1-June 30). Faculty with 12-month service periods are paid for 11 months of service over a 12-month period (July-June), meaning the equivalent of one month is available for paid time off. University of Washington faculty engage in teaching, research and service. Applications will be accepted until the position is filled. The anticipated start date is September 2023.


Candidates should have an MD (or foreign equivalent) and board certification in Pulmonary, Critical Care or Sleep Medicine (or foreign equivalent). In order to be eligible for University sponsorship for an H-1B visa, graduates of foreign (non-U.S.) medical schools must show successful completion of all three steps of the U.S. Medical Licensing Exam (USMLE), or equivalent, as determined by the Secretary of Health and Human Services.
