The City of Batavia is seeking either a Civil Engineer or an Engineering Assistant to support public infrastructure planning, design, and construction within the Department of Public Works. These are full-time, on-site positions based at the Public Works facility with a typical schedule of Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Civil Engineer: Hiring range $89,417–$104,996 DOQ (full range to $123,293), exempt, Pay Grade 15
Engineering Assistant: Hiring range $81,881–$96,148 DOQ (full range to $112,902), non-exempt, Pay Grade 13
Selection Process: The Engineering Assistant/Civil Engineer positions are being posted concurrently. The City reserves the right to fill only one (1) position as a result of these postings. Interested individuals must apply for the specific position they wish to be considered for.
Duties
Civil Engineer: Performs professional engineering work related to the planning, design, review, and inspection of public improvement and development projects. Responsibilities include reviewing engineering plans and plats, coordinating with developers and consultants, preparing designs and cost estimates, overseeing construction activities, enforcing development codes, and supporting City boards, commissions, and departments on engineering matters.
Engineering Assistant: Performs technical and para-professional engineering work in support of public infrastructure and development projects. Responsibilities include field inspections, surveying, drafting and design, GIS and mapping, permit and plan reviews, erosion control inspections, and responding to public inquiries related to engineering projects.
Qualifications
Civil Engineer: Bachelor’s degree from an ABET-accredited college or university in civil engineering or a closely related field, with experience in municipal or public works engineering. Must have passed the Fundamentals of Engineering exam and be eligible to obtain Illinois Professional Engineer licensure within four years.
Engineering Assistant: Associate degree in engineering technology, construction management, surveying, or a related field, with several years of relevant field or technical experience in public works, construction inspection, surveying, drafting, or GIS. Experience with AutoCAD Civil 3D and GIS is preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
Knowledge of civil engineering principles and public works infrastructure, including streets, utilities, drainage, and stormwater systems. Ability to interpret engineering plans, specifications, and technical documents; communicate effectively with contractors, developers, staff, and the public; manage multiple projects and priorities; and perform work accurately in both office and field settings. Proficiency with engineering-related software and tools, including CAD and GIS, and the ability to work collaboratively while maintaining strong attention to detail.
A valid Illinois driver’s license is required for both positions.
