Requirements
Original - Examination
Absolute Requirements: Possession of a valid Class A or Class B Commercial Driver’s License, with an endorsement for vehicles with air brakes.
Minimum Requirements: Gradation from a standard senior high school or the equivalent and four years of experience in the operation and maintenance of light and heavy mobile equipment, or an equivalent combination of experience and training. SUBSTITUTION: Additional experience may substitute for the required education on a year-for-year basis.
Examination: The examination will consist of a written test weighted 30% and a performance test weighted 70%. The minimum passing score on each test will be 70% unless determined otherwise by the Director of Human Resources. Candidates must achieve a passing score on each test to be eligible to compete in each subsequent test and to have their names placed on the eligible list.
The written test will assess candidates' knowledge, skill and ability in areas such as: operation of medium and heavy power-driven equipment such as hydraulic cranes, rubber tire and track mounted front end loaders, combination backhoes, augers and tillers, forklifts, bulldozers, graders and pumps; equipment maintenance requirements including adjustments and repairs; pre-operation, in-operation and post-operation equipment inspection requirements; equipment safety control systems, practices and related occupational hazards; crane set-up procedures; reading comprehension; ability to read and interpret gauges and instruments; and reading and interpreting hand signals, traffic signs and signals.
The performance test will assess candidates' skill in the operation of equipment such as those listed above.
Examination Process: All applicants will be advised by email if they have been admitted to the examination process. Applicants who do not receive a response to their application by Friday, May 1, 2026, should contact the Employee Selection Office at (312) 751-5100.
WRITTEN TEST: The written test will be administered on Saturday, May 9, 2026, at the Chicago High School for Agricultural Sciences, 3857 West 111th Street, Chicago, IL.
Candidates should report at 9:00 a.m. with the approved (printed) admission letter and driver's license or other form of photo identification. Calculators will be provided. The use of books, study guides, cell phones, tablets, smartwatches, laptops or other aids during the test is prohibited.
Candidates are asked to bring a copy of their Class A or Class B Commercial Driver's License, with an endorsement for air brakes to the written test. The properly endorsed license must be issued on or before April 24, 2026.
PERFORMANCE TEST: Candidates who pass the written test will be informed by email regarding the date, time and place of the performance test.
Original Entrance - Appointments
Appointments will be made from an eligible list with three categories: A (Exceptionally Well Qualified), B (Well Qualified) and C (Qualified). Candidates in the highest category will be given first consideration for appointment. The eligible list has a duration of three years. Appointment is subject to successfully passing a physical examination, a drug test, an evaluation of the candidate's ability to meet the specific physical demands of the job and a criminal history background investigation.
