We’re looking for an experienced Cathodic Protection Technologist to bring their expertise to our Corrosion Prevention team. In this fantastic role you'll be responsible for the operation, design, testing/monitoring, commissioning and technical oversight of cathodic protection (CP) systems, ensuring assets are protected from corrosion!
You’ll work closely with internal stakeholders, field teams and contractors, providing specialist advice, undertaking complex CP investigations, and acting as a technical expert for CP activities. This role is ideal for someone who enjoys a mix of fieldwork, analysis, design and mentoring, and who takes pride in doing things right.
You can expect to:
- Manage New Zealand’s largest cathodic protection systems to ensure effective corrosion control of Firstgas and other company’s pipelines and associated structures.
- Lead and be involved in CP surveys and investigations, including pipetosoil surveys, interference testing and fault finding.
- Review, analyse, and interpret CP data, prepare technical reports, and provide clear recommendations to Firstgas and external asset owners.
- Design, install and commission CP systems.
- Provide technical support and mentoring to CP Technicians and act as a subject matter expert for nonroutine CP activities.
- Support internal and external stakeholders with specialist CP advice and problem solving.
- Ensure CP activities are completed safely, on time, accurately and in accordance with company procedures and industry standards.
This role is ideally based with the rest of the team at our Bell Block (Taranaki) office; however, we will consider suitable candidates located elsewhere in the North Island. The role involves travel, which is generally limited and planned in advance, supporting a sustainable work–life balance. Only occasional shortnotice travel may be required to respond to significant reactive maintenance needs.

You’re a technically strong CP professional who enjoys working both independently and as part of a collaborative team. You’re comfortable being accountable for technical decisions, and you communicate clearly with a wide range of stakeholders.
You’ll bring a practical, solutionsfocused mindset, strong attention to detail, and a commitment to high safety and technical standards.
You’ll also have:
- Certification as a Cathodic Protection Technologist (e.g. AMPP/NACE CP3 or equivalent).
- Strong knowledge of cathodic protection principles, surveys, data interpretation and reporting.
- Experience with CP system design, commissioning, interference testing and troubleshooting.
- Familiarity with relevant standards and codes (e.g. AS/NZS 2885, AS 2832).
- An ability to work independently, self-manage, prioritise and proactively communicate is important, along with a full, clean driver's licence.
- You strive for continuous improvement, developing yourself and others as you share your experiences, particularly with apprentices and your hoamahi (colleagues).
