United Rentals is seeking an AI Lead Engineer to drive the design and delivery of intelligent, scalable, and secure AI solutions that support our strategic business initiatives. You will lead efforts to leverage advanced technologies-including Amazon Bedrock, SageMaker, Large Language Models (LLMs), Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG), vector databases, and prompt engineering-to create next-generation systems that transform how we serve customers and operate at scale. This role requires a strong foundation in cloud-native architecture, MLOps, and data engineering, coupled with the ability to partner across business and technology teams to deliver impactful AI solutions. As a leader, you will guide and mentor engineers while shaping the company's AI strategy and technology roadmap.

**This role is a hybrid based in Stamford, CT**

What you'll do:

• AI Solution Design & Delivery
  
  • Architect, design, and implement AI-powered applications using AWS services (Amazon Bedrock, SageMaker, Lambda, ECS, S3, API Gateway, etc.).
  • Develop and manage vectorization pipelines to enable RAG and LLM-driven solutions.
  • Ensure AI architectures integrate seamlessly with SQL, NoSQL, and enterprise data platforms.
• MLOps & Best Practices
  
  • Establish standards for model deployment, monitoring, and lifecycle management.
  • Champion secure, scalable, and extensible AI architectures.
  • Continuously modernize hybrid on-premise and cloud environments.
• Leadership & Collaboration
  
  • Provide technical leadership in generative AI, AI agents, AI tools, and knowledge retrieval systems.
  • Partner with business stakeholders to align AI solutions with strategic goals.
  • Direct, mentor, and develop engineering staff by setting clear goals, providing feedback, and building career growth paths.
  • Foster a culture of collaboration, innovation, and continuous learning.
• Innovation & Strategy
  
  • Evaluate and recommend emerging AI technologies for enterprise adoption.
  • Contribute to IT strategic planning, including the deprecation of legacy systems.
  • Serve as a thought leader, influencing the future direction of AI across the organization.

Requirements:

• Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Data Science, or related field.
• 10+ years of experience in software engineering and architecture, with at least 3-5 years in AI/ML solution design.
• Deep expertise in AWS cloud services (Bedrock, SageMaker, Lambda, API Gateway, etc.).
• Strong knowledge of LLMs, RAG pipelines, embeddings, and vector databases (e.g., Pinecone, FAISS, Weaviate).
• Experience designing data pipelines (ETL/ELT) and integrating SQL & NoSQL systems.
• Proficiency with MLOps frameworks and tools.
• Hands-on expertise in Python and ML frameworks (TensorFlow, PyTorch, Hugging Face).
• Proven leadership skills with a track record of developing high-performing teams.
• Exceptional communication, collaboration, and problem-solving abilities.
